One of the best things about New Zealanders is that we're a DIY bunch, especially if it helps the budget. Our country's DIY mentality could extend to what drinks we serve guests at events...in other words, BYO might be the way to go!

For people in Auckland planning BYO weddings, corporate events or other special occasions, it's easy to find the perfect venue, but it might be more challenging navigating the finer details. Luckily, Spacetoco has some helpful tips and some examples of BYO friendly venues in Auckland!

  • Look out for smaller venues to help the budget - You might think the only BYO venues in Auckland are large venues with high capacity, so what if you're planning a small birthday party or an event that has a few guests? Don't count out the smaller spaces in Auckland - some of them do allow BYO and are cheaper to hire out than bigger venues. The Auckland Table Tennis Association in Newmarket is a great space that's affordable and allows BYO.

  • Serve vs. Sell - Serving alcohol is pretty straightforward but if you want to sell, you'll need a license. Some spaces may already be licensed, but others like the Blockhouse Bay Community Centre in West Auckland aren't. Not to worry - you can get a license from the Auckland Council, but make sure you do this a few weeks before your event.

  • What drinks does the space allow? - You might want to serve cocktails on your special day, but some spaces don't allow the serving of spirits. This might not be a problem for a majority of events, say if you're planning to have bottles of wine and beer at each table at your wedding, or offering your guests craft beers at your low-key birthday party - St Aidan’s Church just outside of Auckland city is the perfect venue for these occasions!

  • Glassware - When it comes to Auckland wedding venues or spaces for corporate events, anything that helps the budget, well...helps! A common cost that comes with BYO is hiring out glassware, so if you find a venue that comes with this, take the opportunity! St Luke's Church and Community Centre on the outskirts of New Zealand's biggest city is a flexible venue that come with wine glasses for guests, perfect for weddings, private functions and other special occasions!

  • Think of how your guests will get home - When planning events that include alcohol, it's a good idea to consider the safety of your guests when it's hometime. Is your space near public transport or taxi services? Somewhere like Auckland CBD's Aaiotanga Community Space is one such venue that's walking distance from Britomart and other bus stops with destinations all over the region, from South Auckland to the North Shore.

  • Fees and other details - Other things to watch out for are extra fees if you do want to BYO at your event. Some spaces are happy for you to serve alcohol to guests but with a small fee to help with the clean up after, like the Grey Lynn Community Centre just outside of the Auckland CBD. For a wedding or large gathering, that might actually be a massive help as it's one less thing to worry about, for a small cost.
