John Keeley Reserve

Karrawirraparri Red gum forest river is the main river on the Adelaide Plains. It flows from the Mount Lofty Ranges in Peramangk Country to Witongga, the freshwater wetlands near the coast, and is fed by several creeks and springs along its 80 km journey. The river is also known as Tarndaparri Red kangaroo river. It was named the Torrens by Colonel William Light after Colonel Robert Torrens. Karrawirraparri was a prime camping area for Kaurna meyunna and provided many food and other resources as well as shelter. It was also a travelling corridor between the coast and the foothills and places in between.

In partnership with state bodies and neighbouring Councils, the River Torrens Linear Park provides a continuous corridor of open space adjacent to the waterway with some sections developed for the local and wider community in a more structured manner for informal recreation. There are pedestrian and cycle links from surrounding areas along the linear paths in the Park.

John Keeley Reserve covers a section of the Linear Park which offers the following features;

• bench seating,

• drinking taps/fountain

Examples of approved activities suitable for the Reserve;

• Community activities and/or services catering to all ages and cultural groups ie child play groups, dog training, community gardens, biodiversity and nature activities etc.

• Educational and community awareness events that support cultural diversity, health, fitness and general community wellbeing.

• Activities of a passive nature that promotes a healthy active lifestyle ie walking, running, cycling etc.
