The Downer Community Association was formed in 1985 (incorporated in 1987) to represent the interests of Downer residents on issues which affect our suburb and surrounding areas. These include local facilities, planning and traffic, development applications, changes to parks and streets, and issues which affect local communities, such as Downer Preschool and the proposed Goodwin independent living development.

About this space

Perfect for multi-age gatherings and large community groups, the Downer Community Association offers our East Hall and fully fenced outdoor garden space to be hired for functions up to 70 people. This indoor/outdoor space is the perfect opportunity to host children's birthday parties, markets, family functions, fitness classes, art classes, parent groups and more.

Features:

  • The East Hall has a hard lino-like floor and seats up to 50 people, ideal for serving meals, arts & crafts or cutting cakes in celebration.

  • Tables and chairs are available to set up in your preferred configuration for your gathering.

  • Double doors open up to the secluded garden space, with a large shade cloth, artificial turf and a sandpit. Trestle tables and chairs are available for setting up in the garden.

  • Kitchen hire is included - The Centre has a kitchen with a stove, microwave, fridge, urns, cups, cutlery, etc. Dishwashing liquid and cloths are provided, but hirers are required to bring their own tea-towels. Please note that the kitchen is available to all hirers in the building and is not for exclusive use.

  • Male and female toilets are available: please note that the Centre does not have disabled toilet facilities and the public toilets near the oval have been decommissioned.

  • An AED/ defibrillator and First Aid box are both affixed to the left hand side wall of the kitchen.

Rules

  • This booking does not provide access to the carpeted West Hall which adjoins the East Hall.

  • Relock opened windows. If you have use of a Centre key, check that all opened doors -- including toilets -- are locked before you leave.

  • Notify the Centre Coordinator ASAP if you note any damage to DCC facilities.

  • Smoking is NOT permitted within the Centre. Please do not use unguarded flames – candles, flambeaus, torches, etc – on premises.

  • Decorations - Do NOT use sticky tape. ‘Blue Tac’ type products acceptable but must be removed with decorations without damage to paint, equipment, etc.

  • Clean and return chairs and tables to their places, leave curtains/blinds as found.

  • Wipe down furniture or counters, so there are no remains of food or beverages.

  • Floors left ‘broom clean’ - brooms are available by the sink between the East Hall and the kitchen. Spills and stains to be sponged up and tables to be wiped down. A cloth and cleaning spray is available in the East Hall.

  • Sandpit to be swept and recovered if used.

  • Any DCA cutlery, dishes etc, used are to be washed clean, dried and replaced.

  • All rubbish to be removed at the end of the booking, including food/scraps.

  • Be a responsible host and neighbour: respect parking signs, noise laws, etc.

  • Accidents happen. Please contact the DCA Representative if a problem arises so that we can resolve it together

  • Ensuring security is maintained for the Downer Community Centre and key. The individual who signs for this key is responsible for ensuring that room/s used is secured after use, and for the safety of Centre key/s. Centre keys must not be passed on to any individual who has not signed this Agreement without permission of the DCA.

  • Notification to the DCA if Regular Client/s wish to access the Centre at any time other than the hours for which the Client is billed (which are listed on the Hire Agreement Form). NB: The DCA cannot guarantee that these wishes can be honoured, or billed at Regular User rate

Additional details

Host's Cancellation Policy
100% refund on cancellations up until 7 days before your booking. After that, there are no refunds on cancellation.
Parking and Public Transport Information
  • Parking is limited as this is a shared parking facility.

  • If parking is unavailable there is a small carpark near the Scouts Hall and playground off on Melba Street.
    This will however require you to walk across the oval to access the Downer Community Centre

  • Buses go through Downer but do not stop directly outside the centre. The number 50 bus goes along Bradfield Street which is one block away from the centre.
