About this space
Tuia te Hapori, which means to ‘sew/bind the community’, is one of the initiatives that has come out of a multiagency group – including Kāinga Ora, Te Korowai Trust, Nelson City Council, Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, New Zealand Police, and the Department of Internal Affairs – that has collaborated to support the southeast Stoke community.
The purpose of Tuia te Hapori is to provide a safe space for the community to engage and connect with agencies, groups, or services available. Tuia te Hapori can be used by any agency or group to host activations, workshops, or events that are beneficial to this community.
Many groups completed a substantial amount of work to transform the empty Kāinga Ora site on the corner of Karaka / Orchard Streets into the community space, including funding from the Lottery Grants Board. Mitre10 MEGA Helping Hands, with the assistance of our local trades, also played a huge part in the delivery of this project.
The internal space is an accessible small 48m2 building located on the corner of Karaka and Orchard Street. It has the following spaces to utilise:
- Open plan kitchen / lounge (with kitchenette/fridge/jug/cups/plates/utensils and 3-seater dining table/cane 4-seater lounge suite)
- Separate office space/meeting room (with 5-seater round table and chairs)
- Toilet/vanity
- Internal lockable storage space (with cleaning products/equipment/extra foldable tables)
- Free WiFi
The external space has a large deck with a ramp down to the footpath of Orchard Street. It has the following to utilise:
- Large wooden deck
- Free kai pantry on deck
- Notice board at bottom of ramp to display information of upcoming events/services
- Garden shed containing BBQ for users use and garden equipment for community hire
- Two CCTV cameras operating, covering the front deck and shed out the back (managed by Te Korowai Trust, Kāinga Ora, and NZ Police)
