The Shire have three (unpowered) bush camping sites to choose from, all accessible by 2WD: Hamersley Inlet Campground located within the internationally recognised Fitzgerald River National Park and the pet friendly Mason Bay and Starvation Bay campgrounds, at picturesque beachside locations approx. 30 mins east of Hopetoun.

Located on the beautiful southern coast of the Fitzgerald Biosphere Coast region in a serene bush setting, 48kms east of Hopetoun and just 10kms from Mason Bay. The Starvation Bay Campground has 33 campsites, a day use car park, boat ramp, drop toilets and dump point. The spectacular bay is widely popular with visitors and locals seeking a day trip or beachside camp stay.
Accessible by 2WD from Hopetoun via the scenic Southern Ocean Road which is partially sealed (up to 12 mile beach) before changing to an unsealed (gravel) road or if you’re heading from Esperance via Jerdacuttup Road (sealed) and Fence Road (unsealed).
The white sandy beaches, rock pools ideal for swimming and snorkelling, beachside camping, fishing and with a boat launching point you won’t want to leave this picturesque setting!
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The family and pet friendly campgrounds can be especially busy over Christmas and January with local Vacation Swim Lessons held in the bay commencing the first week of January. Under new strict Education guidelines to enable swim lessons at Starvation Bay, there will be some additional restrictions in place during the hours that swimming lessons are in progress. This will include the temporary closure of the boat launch facility and eastern beach vehicle access from approximately 7.30am - 12:30pm daily. Signs will be in place when closure is in effect and should the lessons not occur or finish early, the signs and barriers will be removed to indicate that access has re-opened. Boat users will need to be in the water prior to the closure and able to return after 12:30pm or if signs have been removed earlier.

FOR BOOKINGS TO BE COMPLETE YOU MUST PROVIDE THE REGISTRATION OF THE VEHICLE YOU WILL BE TRAVELLING IN OR IN THE CASE OF A HIRE VEHICLE, A BRIEF DECRIPTION OF THE VEHICLE HIRE TO HELP IDENTIFY YOU. PLEASE ENSURE YOU CARRY PROOF OF CONFIRMED BOOKING.
Starvation Bay Campground is located in a coastal bush setting and all sites are unpowered. At times throughout the year and particularly during peak periods, the Shire may appoint a Camp Host to be based on site. To help ensure visitor safety and enjoyment, please adhere to our Campground Rules listed below.
Check-In: 1PM, but if you arrive a bit early and it is obvious that the site has been vacated, you don't need to wait to move in.
Check-Out: 12noon (sharp) on your day of departure. Please ensure that your site is cleared of any rubbish, any campfires completely extinguished and the site cleared ready for the next booking.
Campers including your guests who have not vacated the campsite by the check-out time or leave rubbish behind may incur additional costs and/or infringements.
You must only occupy the site you have booked and paid for and all vehicles and equipment must not extend beyond your designated campsite.
Requests to change your bookings is subject to availability and can only be made during normal office hours by sending a message through your SpacetoCo account or calling (08) 9839 0000. DO NOT REBOOK another site as it will deem your original booking as a cancellation, which is non-refundable. If requesting a change after arrival on weekends, please contact the Duty Ranger by text message on 0427 381 098 (with your name, site number and reason for call). Please note that last minute changes on weekends cannot be guaranteed.
Persons camping under eighteen (18) years of age must be accompanied by an adult and children may not be left unattended in the campground without adult supervision.
There are long drop toilet facilities with shower cubicle areas but you will need to bring your own water.
All sites are unpowered and generators are permitted from 10am- 8pm.
Any vehicles (eg boat, trailer) unable to be located within your designated campsite may be parked in the general day use parking area (subject to space availability) to ensure camp roads are kept clear or an additional campsite should be booked. No camping is permitted in the day use car park.
Please adhere to the speed limit within the campground and be aware of pedestrians and children on bicycles.
Vehicles are only permitted to drive on the beach east of the 4WD beach access track from 1st October to 30th April - entry is sign posted from the northern end of the campground.
Camp fires are permitted but only within designated Fire Rings (if provided with your campsite), except when a Total Fire Ban has been declared. Fires must not be left unattended and fires must be fully extinguished prior to your departure from the campsite.
Firewood is to be brought with you, it is illegal to collect firewood from the surrounding bushland.
Pets are permitted on lead within the campground. Dogs may only be off lead on the beaches in designated areas but owners are required to comply with the Dog Act 1976.
Do not empty chemical toilet waste into campground toilets and please use the designated dump points provided at the campground.
Failure to arrive at your campsite within 24hours without prior communications to the Shire of Ravensthorpe (08) 9839 0000 or [email protected] would be considered as a No Show and may result in your booking being cancelled and released back into the system. Please see Terms and Conditions for more information.
Please note that there are additional restrictions to dogs on leash, vehicle beach access including the temporary closure of the boat ramp from 7am - 3pm during the summer VACSwim program in January. Please adhere to signage when in place.
Campfires are not permitted on days when Fire Danger Rating is EXTREME or CATASTROPHIC.
It is important to note that during a Total Fire Ban or Vehicle/Harvest Ban being declared, in addition to no open fires permitted, generators must not be used and no vehicles are permitted off-road (cars, 4WDs, quad bikes and dune buggy).

For all campers in Tent City you will need to park your vehicle on the road above the camping area and please note there are a number of steps that lead down to the camping area. Please be considerate of other campers to ensure they have sufficient space to park their vehicle close to their camping area. If travelling with more than one vehicle we recommend during peak times that you use the day use parking area near the boat ramp to leave the additional vehicles.
December to April can be very hot and the risk of bushfire can be very high. In the event of an emergency, please keep up to date via www.emergency.wa.gov.au or the Fitzgerald Biosphere Coast Facebook page or tune in ABC Local Radio, 6PR. If the situation escalates please move to the muster point for each campground which is located at the boat ramp.
